Founded in 1934, the company is best known for a series of Gothic"Hammer Horror" films made from the mid-1950s until the 1970s. Hammer also produced science fiction, thrillers, film noir and comedies – and in later years, television series. During its most successful years, Hammer dominated the horror film market, enjoying worldwide distribution and considerable financial success. This success was due, in part, to distribution partnerships with major United States studios, such as Warner Bros. Since its birth in 1934, Hammer has made over 150 feature films. Whilst synonymous with horror, and the genre-defining classics it produced such as Dracula, The Curse Of The Werewolf and Frankenstein Created Woman, the company has a varied history, with noir, action-adventure movies, psychological thrillers and historical epics also to its name.
Hammer is a suitable film distributor for my film because even though it mainly specializes in horror, it also mixes the genre up and has been known to do psychological thrillers too. This will be a bonus for us as the company will already be familiar with creating a film of this genre so will be familiar and know the best ways to produce, distribute and exhibit the film. As the company is based in the United Kingdom, we will be attracting mainly British audiences and the actors in our film will also be British therefore the audience will feel that they can relate. Hammer is an independent film company therefore they will be familiar with using the simple technology such as Apple Macs and Final Cut to produce their films on which will be helpful for us as we are also on a small budget. They will also be able to use special effects on a cheap budget as they have experience with this in their own films to make our film look better.
